One of the narrowest spots on the mountains

Linden sits at about 526 metres on a thin section of ridge, with Linden Creek cutting a deep valley on the northern side — a major tributary of the Grose River. There is not much town: the highway, Railway Parade, Glossop Road running up to the Linden Observatory complex, and national park on both flanks.

That geometry is the whole story of roofing here. Houses are scattered, some well back from the road, often on bush blocks with long driveways and ground that falls away sharply. Getting a ladder, scaffold and materials to a roof at Linden takes planning that a flat suburban block does not.

What we assess before we quote

  • Access. Driveway grade and surface, where a vehicle can actually stand, how far materials have to be carried, and whether there is any hardstand at all.
  • Edge protection. On a block that drops away, the fall from a roof edge is not the roof height — it can be considerably more. That gets set up properly or not at all.
  • Tree cover. Overhanging limbs decide both litter load and branch-strike risk.

We put all of that in the written quote rather than discovering it on the first morning and renegotiating.

The roof faults themselves

Mid-mountains conditions: regular winter frost, so bedding mortar under ridge caps degrades steadily; heavy leaf and bark load off the bush on both sides, so valleys and gutters dam and then corrode; and moss starting to establish on southern pitches that spend the winter in shade.

Houses here are a mix of weatherboard cottages, fibro, and later bush-block builds. Steeper original pitches are common and a steel roof works well on them — see metal and Colorbond roofing.
