Winmalee sits at about 310 metres north of Springwood, and it is almost entirely enclosed by Blue Mountains National Park — part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The suburb runs out along Hawkesbury Road and Singles Ridge Road, with residential streets like Birdwood Avenue, Coramandel Avenue and Buena Vista Road reaching out onto ridges with bush on both sides.

Housing is predominantly later than the upper mountains: a lot of 1970s and 1980s brick veneer on concrete tile, some fibro and weatherboard, and newer rebuilds in Colorbond. Low-pitched tile roofs are common, which matters — a low pitch sheds litter far more slowly than a steep one.

Where ember risk and roof maintenance are the same job

This is a suburb where the bushfire conversation is not an upsell. The NSW Rural Fire Service describes the district as one of the most bush fire prone in the state, and the roofline is where the building is most vulnerable: gutters full of dry leaf and bark, open tile ends, unsealed roof-to-wall junctions, unguarded vents and penetrations.
